7/21/14 – Fort Myers, FLORIDA Fort Myers lawn care company, Larue Pest Management, announces two of its team members have recently become FNGLA (Florida Nursery Growers and Landscaping Association) Certified Horticulture Professionals. This certification program is the industry’s standard for measuring horticulture knowledge on everything from plant and pest identification to landscape management. Both Abby Farmer and Mike Cruise of Larue Pest completed their certification in early July.

“It’s important to us that people know that our representatives aren’t there to ‘sell’ them," said Keith Ruebeling, Owner of Larue Pest Management. “They genuinely want to help homeowners make informed decisions when it comes to caring for their lawn and landscaping. That’s why we go to great lengths to make sure our team is continually working to further their education.”

The Certified Horticulture Professional program has been in existence since 1984, with more than 1,700 certified professionals in Florida, the southeast and the Bahamas. According to the FNGLA, this certification program promotes professionalism among horticulture professionals, including nursery, greenhouse, landscape, and retail garden center employees. In 2006, the program was updated to integrate principles of the Florida Friendly Green Industry Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) program, and has been endorsed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

In order to qualify for the certification, Mike and Abby were required to first pass a comprehensive, four-part written exam about plant identification, disease and insect control, plant biology, and landscape management. The FNGLA’s FCHP exam is a 3-hour written test measuring proficiency in horticultural practices. Candidates must pass each section of the exam with a minimum of 70% in order to earn the FCHP certification. The sections include:

  • Plant Identification
  • Horticulture Practices
  • Safety
  • General Horticulture

Ruebling added, “This certification is just one more way we can give clients peace of mind knowing that we thoroughly understand their family’s tree, shrub, and lawn care needs.”
