Landscaping Design Tips - Proper Mulching by Shaun Sadree 2With our alternating wet and dry seasons, one of the biggest challenges to keeping your landscape healthy year-round is moisture retention. By mulching plant beds, you help to retain soil moisture, which can reduce the amount of irrigation you need to provide. Conserving water is beneficial for the environment and your wallet.

Mulching also helps reduce storm water runoff, which keeps water in your landscape and prevents excess fertilizer from entering the water table or running into streams.

In areas of your yard that are too shady for grass or too difficult to reach with a lawn mower, consider mulching instead. This will reduce the amount of fertilizer and water needed for your lawn. Mulching also helps cut down on weeds, so areas under mulch will need less supervision to look their best. Mulch only needs to be applied once or twice a year, and 2 to 3 inches is the optimal level. When you add mulch to the base of plants, be sure to keep a distance of 2 inches between the mulch and the plant to help avoid disease.

Consider using options to traditional wood mulch in order to deter termites. Some options include fallen tree leaves, pine needles, crushed shells, and small rocks.

  1. Mulch is such a cost effective way to have a nice looking yard that won’t break the bank! Given the drought in full effect over here on the west coast, many people are turning to waterless landscapes and this is a golden ticket for most!

  2. Most people don’t bother mulching beyond the summer months, and then wonder why they have trouble maintaining a level of quality year-round. Great tips as always!
